MAORI NEW YEAR!!!

New Year on the day the new moon rises, and others celebrate on the day after the new moon. Celebrations can last up to 3 days.
The things that we can celebrate for Matariki is by doing Matariki is seven stars and it is a cluster of stars. It is important to the Maori people because it is the New year which means it is a new beginning for the Maori people. Matariki is based on myths and it tells you about what happened before the seven sisters became stars. Matariki is all about the Maori New Year.

Matariki is in the middle of June which is in
winter. Matariki begins to rise in the last few days of May. Some iwi (tribes) start celebrations when Matariki is first seen, however it is the first new moon after Matariki that officially signals the Maori New Year. Some people celebrate the
  • weaving
  • making cards for your parents
  • go to the beach and have some kumara
  • have a swim
  • cook dinner
  • spend time with your family
  • read a matariki book
  • sing songs
At May Road we celebrated Matariki by going to the front of the gate and putting some rocks inside our Matariki garden. Also we went to the hall for Matariki assembly and everyone had to perform what they been learning about Matariki. So Room 13 did a stick song which was called E papa waiari
